THE KANE & PAPA BRIEF
A few things worth knowing this month.
๐ Why Do Leaves Really Change Color?
Those reds, oranges, and yellows aren’t actually created by fall weather. Many of the pigments have been hiding in the leaves all summer.
As daylight decreases, trees produce less chlorophyllโthe pigment responsible for all that summer green. Once the green fades, the yellows and oranges that were there all along finally get their moment.
And those brilliant reds? They’re a little different. Some trees actually produce red pigments in the fall.
Basically, October is nature’s big reveal.
๐ A Halloween Fact for Your Next Trivia Night
Americans didn’t always carve pumpkins.
The tradition traces back to Ireland, where people carved turnips and other root vegetables and placed lights inside them. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America and discovered something much easier to carve: the pumpkin.
We’re grateful. Carving a face into a turnip sounds like entirely too much work.
๐ Richmond Reminder
October is one of the best times to get outside in Central Virginia. Between the changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and fall festivals, it’s a great excuse to explore somewhere you haven’t been in a whileโwhether that’s the James River, Maymont, a local farmers market, or simply your own neighborhood.
ONE LAST THING…
October 31 isn’t just Halloween.
It’s also the deadline most of us use to finally admit that the outdoor furniture probably isn’t getting used again this year.
Happy October from all of us at Kane & Papa.
