Kane & Papa is a small bankruptcy law firm by design. We believe clients are better served when the attorneys handling their case understand not only the bankruptcy filing itself, but the financial problem that brought them to us in the first place.
For more than three decades, our attorneys have represented individuals and families throughout the Richmond area in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases. Our practice includes everything from straightforward debt relief to cases involving foreclosure, vehicle repossession, wage garnishment, tax debt, support obligations, substantial assets, and other complicated financial issues.
Our Approach to Client Service
Bankruptcy is rarely a one-size-fits-all process. We take the time to understand what a client is trying to accomplish—whether that means protecting a home, keeping a vehicle, stopping a garnishment, dealing with tax debt, or simply getting out from under overwhelming unsecured debt.
Our attorneys and experienced staff work together throughout the case, while making sure clients have clear guidance about what is happening, what is expected of them, and what comes next. Kane & Papa combines decades of bankruptcy experience with a hands-on, collaborative approach to representing our clients. Our attorneys regularly handle Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases in the Richmond Division of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and work closely with our paralegal team throughout each case.
Because bankruptcy cases can last anywhere from a few months to several years, we place a high value on continuity, communication, and knowing our clients’ cases well enough to respond when circumstances change.
James E. Kane

James “Jimmy” Kane is the President and a shareholder of Kane & Papa and has practiced bankruptcy law in Virginia since 1989.
Jimmy earned his Juris Doctor from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, where he was selected for membership on the University of Richmond Law Review. He previously earned his B.S. with Distinction from George Mason University in 1985.
Over more than three decades of practice, Jimmy has represented thousands of individuals facing financial problems and has extensive experience in both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases.
A lifelong Virginian, Jimmy lives in Henrico County and has three children and five grandchildren. Outside the office, he enjoys traveling, spending time with his family, CrossFit, softball, racquetball, and flag football.
Jason E. Kane
Shareholder

Jason Kane is a shareholder at Kane & Papa and works extensively in the firm’s consumer bankruptcy practice, representing individuals in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases throughout the Richmond area.
Jason began practicing law in 2010. He earned his Juris Doctor from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah and was admitted to the Utah Bar in 2010. He was later admitted in Arizona in 2016 and Virginia in 2021. His practice experience has included both bankruptcy and securities law.
At Kane & Papa, Jason is closely involved in the day-to-day management of the firm and in developing practical strategies for cases involving foreclosure, vehicle debt, garnishment, tax issues, asset protection, and complex Chapter 13 matters.
Jason lives in New Kent County with his wife and four children. Outside the office, he enjoys playing guitar, working out, grilling, and spending time with his family.
Kree Small
Associate Attorney

Kree Small is an associate attorney at Kane & Papa and represents clients in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy cases.
Kree earned her Juris Doctor from Elon University School of Law and was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 2024. Before becoming an attorney, she worked at Kane & Papa as a paralegal, giving her practical bankruptcy experience well before she began practicing law. After law school, Kree gained additional courtroom experience with the Office of the Public Defender before returning to Kane & Papa as an attorney.
Her background on both the attorney and paralegal sides of a bankruptcy practice gives her a strong understanding of the details involved in preparing a case, working with clients, resolving trustee issues, and moving Chapter 13 cases toward confirmation and successful completion.
Originally from Tappahannock, Virginia, Kree values family and community. She enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, and staying active through Pilates and Barre classes.
Where You Can Find Us
We are conveniently located in Richmond, Virginia with access to I-95, Powhite Parkway, RMA and I-64. We have our own private parking lot to make parking easy for our clients. We validate parking for all client visits. Free 2-hour street parking is also available.
